Students,

I hope that all of you had a wonderful holiday weekend. As you continue to work on your NHD Assignments I would like for you to keep the following items in mind:

1st make sure that under Assignment #1 you have defined your 4 areas of interest keeping your essential questions in mind. Your four areas of interest should be cohesive and maintain flow throughout your paper. (For example, If you are focusing on Child Soldiers around the world your 4 areas of interest should be child soldiers in different places around the world, and you should remain focused on this)

2nd make sure that under Assignment # 2 you meet all of the requirements for choosing the sources required for your final product. Research what primary and secondary sources are of you do not remember this information from class. You must have source cards and you must have an Annotated Bibliography. Nobody turned in an ANNOTATED bibliography!!! This must be fixed before final product.

3rd your fifty note cards should be numbered according to your sources that they come from, not labeled but numbered, and you must have a Bibliography Page with the same information.

4th you must have a WELL DEVELOPED outline. Many students turned in a skeleton form of the outline and you will need to add in more information. The outline should be based upon both your areas of interest and the essential questions. The GUIDELINE is located on the WIX under Resources.

Then when you begin drafting your paper it should be about the overall topic of Child Soldiers and the subtopics of your areas of interest with a focus on the essential questions.

When you submit your final product you must turn in everything even if it has already been graded with the guideline page.

Background Information:
Wang Yue (Chinese: 王悦; pinyin: Wáng Yuè), also known as "Yue Yue", was a two-year-old Chinese girl who was run over by two vehicles on the afternoon of 13 October 2011 in a narrow road in Foshan, Guangdong. As she lay bleeding on the road for more than seven minutes, at least 18 passers-by skirted around her body, ignoring her. She was eventually helped by a female rubbish scavenger and sent to a hospital for treatment, but succumbed to her injuries and died eight days later. The closed-circuit television recording of the incident was subsequently uploaded onto the Internet, and quickly stirred widespread reaction in China and overseas. Many commentators saw this as indicative of a growing apathy in contemporary Chinese society.

Child's death prompts China to look at morals

BEIJING – Road inspector Guo Mingyi donates his modest salary to the needy, has given blood 79 times, has worked five years' worth of overtime during the past 16 years and arrives two hours early, every day, to his job at a state-owned mining firm.

Guo says his "Good Samaritan" approach to life reflects the attitude of most Chinese. He insists that the tragic tale of Wang Yue, a little girl who was run down and left to die on a busy market street as people passed by, is not typical of his country.

"More and more Chinese want to stand up and help other people," says Guo, 53. The apparent indifference to a grievously injured toddler lying in the street, captured by a security camera and seen worldwide, "does not represent the true moral strength of China."

Many Chinese say the lack of compassion shown the girl, who died of her injuries last week, symbolizes the moral failings of an increasingly selfish society obsessed with making money.

"We should look into the ugliness in ourselves with a dagger of conscience and bite the soul-searching bullet," said Wang Yang, Communist Party boss of Guangdong province.

The video showed that the bleeding toddler was ignored by 18 people either walking or riding past before she was helped by a scrap picker, whose shouts summoned her mother nearby.

A survey conducted by China Youth Daily, a Communist Party newspaper, stated that 88% of respondents agreed that the increasing indifference among people was the real cause for the toddler's death. As for why 18 people passed by the girl, 71% of respondents thought they were afraid of bringing trouble on themselves.

The death has prompted debate on whether legislation is needed to force people to help strangers in need, and also to protect Good Samaritans from false accusations of wrongdoing. Some teachers and other leaders said they hope China will take new approaches on moral instruction and community spirit.

The prospects for change appear dim.

China's ruling party appears to be falling back on traditional, top-down methods to raise moral standards. The broadcast ministry ordered this week that the nation's popular satellite TV stations must run "morality-building" shows and cut down on reality TV and other "overly entertaining" shows.

In addition, college students in Beijing are being summoned to hear the stirring tales of Guo Mingyi and other "moral models," a variant on the "model worker" awards China has propagandized since 1950. This ethics roadshow forms one of thousands of events organized annually by China's network of party-led "civilization offices." They also hand out the 'National Civilized City' awards in which Foshan, the city where Wang Yue was struck down, was a recent candidate.

These old methods "are useful but certainly not enough" to combat China's moral crisis, says Li Maosen at People's University in Beijing. "During the last 30 years, when people emphasize economic results, they are often more selfish and self-centered."

Role models remain tough to copy in a country where moral education is linked to political indoctrination, he says. Instead of abstract ideas, Chinese want guidance on what they should or should not do, Li says.

"People should also be encouraged to seek their own initiatives. The future of China's moral promotion is based on the promotion of civil communities," he says.

In the southern boomtown of Shenzhen, bordering Hong Kong, Cai Weijun has been trying just that.

"In Chinese society, people help those they know, but if they don't know them, they may consider their own interests first," he says. To foster more community spirit, Cai established a "Happy Posthouse" program last year using activities such as singing to unite residents.

The results were encouraging, he says, but this independent project folded this year from lack of funding. In Beijing's Yongshan community, which translates as "Forever Kindhearted," there are no such worries, as its party-led civil management practice was chosen this month as the model for the entire city.

From hounding litterbugs to chasing off street vendors and breaking up marital disputes, the 180 members of Yongshan's "Citizen Exhortation Team," Beijing's first, vow to clean up their neighborhood, boost civic pride and raise moral standards. By year's end, all of Beijing's 1.1 million city volunteers will be re-branded into similar groups.

Wearing the red armbands that identify them, Sun Xiuying, 53, a retired cleaner, says residents here would respond far more quickly than those who failed toddler Wang Yue. Sun admits she has been sworn at a lot, but still considers her unpaid job a grand honor.

"At first my family didn't understand, and said I should focus on our home, and not bother with public matters," she says. "But everyone must look after our community, or it'll be chaotic. Now they understand and are proud of me."

China should free up space for non-government organizations and activities, says Tan Fang, a professor at Guangzhou's South China Normal University who runs a website and foundation to encourage Good Samaritans.

"In America, good examples come from civil society, not just from government. People in China should also have the freedom to serve society; the government does not have to do everything," he says.

Week Packs for last week are due now. SQ3R must be attached as number 6! SQ3Rs that are not attached will not be accepted. New Week packs for this week will be due on next Monday and Tuesday. If you are not getting your work completed this week in class you need to bring these items home over the weekend as next week no extension will be provided unless you were absent.

Students this is the 2nd nine weeks so many of the allowances that were given during the first nine weeks will no longer be available in all classes. So make sure that you are staying on top of your assignments in my class and all other classes.

Reminder,

NHD assignment #1 is due for every student on Monday. Students from B-day you are getting only one courtesy extension until Monday to turn the assignment in. I have already explained in class that the topic of Child Soldiers is not optional that is the only topic that you can do your paper on this year. You may not work in groups, the paper is to be done individually. Due dates are on the outline. Please take the time to review the outline before you contact me with questions.

My grade book WILL be closed on Thursday at 2:30 no exceptions!

Students that are missing test grades it is your responsibility to come to me and let me know that you were absent on test day and that you need to make it up. Recycling a grade...

Please note that you now have your first test back in your hand for a possible recycle. If you made less than a 70% you are eligable. You should have a green intitial and return stamp on your paper with an expiration date printed on the test sheet IF you are eligable. This sheet should be turned in with your test corrections.

Remember that all instructions must be followed in order to receive any credit. You will only receive up to half of the points missed for corrections. The instructions are posted on the World Blog under "Recycle ME" and the actual "Test" is there as well. Do you have to print out the test? NO! If you can look at it electronically while you work that is ok! Remember these are due next Tuesday and Wednesday, NO exceptions or excuses will be accepted!

This is one of your opportunities to raise your grade that students ask for at the end of the quarter. This can only be used now, SO USE IT! Plus, you want to make sure that you understand the many concepts covered in this chapter.
